Mount Meru
Mount Meru – East Africa's hidden gem, is nestled in Tanzania's heart, offering a captivating alternative to Kilimanjaro. Rising to 4,562 meters, it presents a challenge for all trekkers, with lush rainforests, diverse wildlife, and dynamic landscapes as you ascend. Conquering this dormant volcano is amplified by panoramic vistas – from Arusha National Park to Mount Kilimanjaro's silhouette.
Mount Meru offers several walking routes for trekkers to choose from, each providing a unique experience and perspective of the mountain's stunning landscapes. Here are some of the popular walking routes on Mount Meru:
Momella Gate Route: This is the most commonly used starting point for Mount Meru treks. It takes you through the Arusha National Park and offers opportunities to spot wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and various antelope species. The trail passes through lush forests and moorlands before reaching the summit.
Saddle Route: This route approaches the mountain from the west, starting at the Arusha National Park gate. It's known for its spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru Crater. The Saddle Route joins the Northern Route near the summit.
Northern Route: This route is less frequented but provides a scenic journey. It approaches the mountain from the north and offers a chance to explore the Meru Crater. It's a longer route that provides a more remote and tranquil trekking experience.
Timboto Hut Route: This route is also known as the "alternative" route and offers a different perspective on the mountain. It's less crowded and provides an opportunity to explore the eastern side of Mount Meru.
Maji ya Upepo (Winds Water) Route: This is another lesser-known route that provides a tranquil trekking experience. It starts at the Arusha National Park gate and winds through picturesque landscapes.
